When you upgraded your Windows 8 computer to Windows 8.1 you may well have noticed that the amount of free hard drive space available to you suddenly dropped. This is because during the upgrade process a large number of old files are retain in case anything goes wrong during the installation.
Once you are up and running with Windows 8.1, there is no need to hang on to these files and they can be safely deleted. You could find that you are able to claim back several gigabytes of files â€" which can be a significant amount if you are using an SSD instead of a traditional hard drive.
Open up This PC by pressing the Windows key and E at the same time. Right click on the drive that has Windows installed on it and select Properties from the context menu that appears. Now click the Disk Cleanup button and wait for a moment while your drive is analysed.
When the scan is complete, click the Clean up system files button at the bottom of the dialog and then wait whilst your drive is checked once again.
Once the second scan completes, the Disk Cleanup dialog will have a few extra options. In the Files to delete list, tick the box next to the entry labelled Previous Windows installation(s). You can also work through the list and select any other types of data you would like to clear off your drive.
Click OK and then confirm that you are happy to proceed by clicking the Delete Files button.
That’s all there is to it. You can just sit back and wait while valuable gigabytes are reclaimed for you.
