Turn Chrome’s New Tab Page into a Personal Tab and Task Manager using Over Task

Previously we’ve discussed about few new tab extensions for Chrome. Today I came with a tab and task management extension called “Over Task” for Chrome. We have plenty of task management applications available for mobile, web, desktops and browsers. The concept of task management is common you write a  task, set a date and time and mention the priority. These are the basic steps but the success of the application is based on how simple it is. Over Task carries a unique concept and a new interface for task management.

Whenever you open a new tab in Chrome, it will display the tasks you’ve created. There will be two panels on the screen. In the left panel, you have options to create a task. In the right panel, the tasks you’ve created. Creating a task in this app is very simple. Give your task a name, select the category and add it your wall. If you want to set some priority and a date for your task, click advanced options on the window and choose them. You can set the priorities as High, Medium and Low. Based on the priority you set, colors of your task will change. So you can quickly identify the task you want to do it right now.

over-task-3

While creating a task, you can also add the currently opened tabs to your task. If you are doing an online job and you create a task based on your work, you can group few tabs and add to it for future reference. All the task you’ve created will be available on the home page. You can search and filter the tasks based on priority. Every time you open and close the tab, your last task will be saved and the app will be ready to create a new one. This extension manages your Chrome tabs and tasks at the same time.

over-task-1

An arrow in the right top corner of the window will have some useful tutorials related to Over Task. If you have any doubts regarding the app, you can use that option. If you’ve added tabs with the task, whenever you open that particular task, all the tabs you have saved will open with that. To open a task click “View” and you will be redirected to the task management page. In that page, you will see three main categories, DO, Research and Communicate. Do will track the web apps you’ve used to complete the task.

over-task-2

In the research section, it will track the sites you’ve referred to complete the task. In Communicate Section, it will show, with whom you’ve communicated during the task to complete it. Overall it is an excellent application and a must have extension for Chrome users. Over Task is in its beta stage now and much more features are yet to come. So try this on your browser and share your experience with us in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.

Kiwix Lets you Download the Entire Content of Wikipedia for Offline Access

Wikipedia is one of the greatest sources of information. It has wide variety of topics with complete information about many important jargons and terms you need. The only thing you need is the Internet connection. Sometimes we may don’t have an Internet connection especially while we are travelling. So, to help you in those times, today I came with an application called “Kiwix”, which lets you use Wikipedia on the go.

Kiwix  is a client application for Wikipedia. It lets you download the complete content in your preferred language. The size of the entire content in English is 18 GB. It is bit large for mobile devices but it gives a complete offline access to the entire application. So if you are a regular user of Wikipedia, you definitely need this one.

kiwix-2

Kiwix is now available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. Also it is available for Android devices. You can download the application from Kiwix’s website. Once you download and open the application, choose your language and start downloading the content. It is not necessary to download the entire content, you have choices to select your content which actually reduce the download size.

Kiwix is a portable application, you don’t need to install it in your computer. Just unzip the compressed file and start using it. So you can carry Kiwix in any portable device for instant access. All the downloaded content will be available in the library of the application. Library has an inbuilt search engine to find the content based on your search keywords.

kiwix-1

After you download the content to library, you can export them as PDF/HTML files to your computer. It supports more than 100 languages and create tabs for quick content navigation. It has an inbuilt content manager and downloader to organize the content you download. You can either download the content via HTTP or Torrent Clients.

It is a must have application for teachers, students and people who travel a lot. Once you download the content, you can update them later when you go online. Organize your Gmail Attachments on Cloud using Metis Me

Before cloud applications were introduced, Gmail is the place where people save important files and documents to access from different places. It was the first well known cloud storage application in the Internet. Though we have plenty of cloud services, still people use Gmail to keep some important files. Only problem in Gmail is, you don’t have any default option to organize your attachments. Previously I wrote about a chrome extension to automatically upload your Gmail attachments to different cloud services. Today I came with a similar application called “MetisMe”, which helps you to upload your attachments to different cloud services right from your browser.

metis-me-1

MetisMe is a web application, which helps you to connect cloud accounts to Gmail, from your browser and different mobile devices. Once you install the extension in your browser, it will create a link called “Attachments” on the sidebar of your Gmail account. Using that you can see all the attachments you’ve sent and received in your account for the past one year. Instead of searching in emails, this feature will help you to quickly locate the files you need.

metis-me-2

Another important feature is uploading the attachments to your cloud accounts. Instead of manually doing the download and upload process on your files, you can do this from your Gmail using MetisMe. Right  now it  supports three main cloud services Evernote, Dropbox and Google drive. To upload your attachments first you need to sign in to the cloud service you need. After logging in, go to the “Attachments” link in your Gmail account and mark all the attachments you need.

metis-me-3

On the top, near to download attachments, you can see an icon with different cloud services option. Click that and you will get a list of cloud services to upload your attachments. This process will be a backup for your files by the same time you can organize your attachments in a single place.  In Gmail, all your attachments will be scattered in different emails but MetisMe will help you to keep those files in a single place for easy access.

metis-me-4

Other than uploading in cloud services, you can forward or download your attachments using this application. MetisMe is now available for Chrome and Firefox. Also you can access this application from your Android and iOS devices. So wherever you are, you can upload and organize your Gmail attachments easily using MetisMe. Try this on your browser and  mobile devices and share your experience with us in the comment box. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.

An Easier Way to Find Previously Closed Tabs in Chrome

Chrome, the popular web browser from Google, has much going for it, including speed (though it is becoming a bit more bloated these days), a clean interface, a customizable New Tab page and loads of extensions. It also features an easy way to reopen a tab that was accidentally closed â€" right click on any tab and choose “Reopen closed tab” from the context menu.

While that sounds simple enough, it is not as good beneath the surface. You see, it will only give you the last tab closed. If you need to go back further, say five tabs ago, then the process must be repeated, without killing each one, as you slowly move backwards through time. It works, but it is certainly not elegant.

This is where that wealth of handy little extensions comes in. Head to the Chrome App Store and look for one called Recycle Bin. As with every extension, this one is free. Grab it and we will get started.

Once installed, you will find a multi-colored icon will find a home up in the menu bar, appearing with any others you may have, just to the right of the omnibar. Note that this can vary, as there are different choices â€" more on that in a bit.

recycle bin icon

An ever-changing number appears laid over the icon, representing the number of previously closed pages it contains at a given moment.

Click the icon and a list appears, with a scroll bar if there are enough tabs here to require it. You can now scan the list for the tab you are looking for and click to reopen it, even if was 15 tabs ago.

tab list

There is also a menu across the top that contains Share, Comment and Rate â€" all designed to get word out regarding the developers work. A brief break is followed by Options and a link to the developer’s web site.

Click options, and you will find a sparse, but simple design containing the customizations that can be made to the add-on. There are several icons that you can choose from. There is also an option for the number of past tabs it will save â€" this is set to 20 by default.

options

There are a number of extensions available in Chrome, providing various ways to control your tabs. For those of us who spend our days working with multiple sites open simultaneously, this is just one way of making life just a little bit simpler.

Access Google’s New Search Interface in Chrome 29

If you’ve upgraded to the latest version of Chrome, a quick setting change can unlock a new search interface for Google. Enable this option and you’ll lose the familiar search box in favor of a navigation menu as well as gaining a new share button and new tab page.

Make sure you’re running the newest release of Chrome â€" just hit the menu button and select About Google Chrome. Once you’re updated, head to the address bar and type chrome://flags before pressing Enter.

chrome_search_1

Press Ctrl + F to bring up the search bar, type Enable Instant Extended API and press Enter. Select Enabled from the drop down menu for this setting.

chrome_search_2

The new setting won’t take effect until your restart the browser, so click the Relaunch Now button at the bottom of the screen.

chrome_search_3

Perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is the new Apps button that appears in your bookmarks toolbar. This provides easy access to a number of Google services.

chrome_search_4

You should also find that there is a new navigation bar at the top of the page when you perform a search, and this includes a new Share menu as well as links to Google apps.

Some people are reporting that not all of these features are available yet, but it is unclear whether this is due to the platforms being used or because of a gradual global rollout. Try it out for for yourself and see how you get on

Should you decide you want to revert back to the old look, simply change Enable Instant Extended API so that it is disabled again.

There are times when you want to capture a part of your computer screen â€" especially if you are a blogger â€" and share it with your friends or anyone for that matter. Normally, if you are a new user, you would use the simple print screen button, paste the image in paint and edit the required part. However, this method can work out but it can be time consuming as you have to switch multiple applications to get the screenshot. If you use Google Chrome, you should have a pretty good idea that it comes with handful of extensions that allow users to capture screenshots and edit them. One such extension that helps you tackle this task is known as Pixlr Grabber.

See Where Your Android Stands With Geekbench 3

Android devices have a way of accumulating on us these days. New phones and tablets seem to launch at such a frenetic pace that it is hard to keep up with the latest and greatest. Worse, we all end up owning multiple devices, though it is sometime difficult to guage which is the best and fastest â€" I now own two phones and three tablets, though one of the phones is older and I actually am not even sure where in the house it currently resides. Still it is listed when I visit the Google Play store.

Now there is a way to test each device, providing it is running one of the newer builds of Android â€" 4.0 or later in this case. This is a flat-out, nerdy benchmark test â€" perhaps why it is appropriately named  Geekbench. In this case, it is version three of the app, which builds on what was previously released.

geekbench-3-compatability

To get started, you will obviously need to head to the Play store and grab a copy, though it will lighten your wallet by $0.99, which is certainly not a tremendous amount to pay. In fact, for the return of this in-depth information, it may be considered a small price to shell out.

The latest build contains 15 new tests and re-written versions of 12 of the tests contained within the last build of the application. New introductions include encryption, image processing, signal processing, and physics simulation.

Once launched, the app is much faster than you may assume, knocking through 100 separate tests in around three minutes, and that was on a Galaxy Nexus â€" not the newest smartphone on the market.

geekbench-3-running-tests

When completed, the app scores your device â€" in the case of my Galaxy Nexus, it rated a 109 out of a possible 200, though other devices have potential scores that can run higher than 200. For instance, I ran a test of the new Nexus 7 and it scored a 580 out 1485 possible points.

It provides basic information on the device, such as build and OS, though you can find these things in Settings as well. Scroll further down and you will discover considerably more, including bar graphs that show performance in each and every category you could possibly wish for.

Screenshot_2013-08-18-06-56-17

Conclusion

While this is not free, the cheap cost makes it well worth the investment, especially given that, once purchased, the app can be installed on all of your compatible devices. So far I have only checked the Galaxy Nexus and the new Nexus 7, but plan to also run a test on the Asus MeMO tablet as well. Google TV is obviously not compatible.
