picVpic Takes Online Shopping To The Next Level

Most of the people prefer online shopping than purchasing from the retail stores. One of the main reasons is, many online shopping sites offer more discount than the retail stores. The only problem with online shopping is you have to search a lot, to compare products and price between different websites. Previously, I wrote about a chrome extension to automatically find coupons when you checkout from a shopping site. Today, I’ve come with a new web app called “picVpic“, which has a huge collection of clothing and accessories from popular sites around the world. Let’s have  a look at the features and functions of the app below.

picvpic-1

On the homepage of the application, you can see a list of clothing and accessories for men and women in a separate panel. You can switch the slider below to see the men and women clothings. The web app shows you the product from more than 500 online stores. There is a menu bar on the top where you can search the site for popular brands, products in discount sales, different collections, etc. To start with the app, first  you have to choose which clothing or accessory you need to buy. Once you select that, it will take you to the massive collection of that particular product.

picvpic-2

There you can choose 3 to 5 products and compare their prices, model, etc., in a separate panel. Instead of going to different shopping sites and comparing them in your browser tabs, this web app will be very helpful to compare all the products in a single place. Also, you can see discounts for all the popular brands from different sites in a single place using this application. To compare your products, you need to sign up with your email id or using your Facebook or Twitter account. After choosing a product, everytime you don’t need to come back to the home page. You can access all the categories for both men and women in the top left corner menu.

picvpic-3

Every product you open will have a complete description, official website link, social sharing option and a comment section. So, you can see all the user reviews and different pictures of that particular product. If you are regular user of online shopping site for buying clothes and accessories, picVpic is definitely worth giving a try. Share your experience with the web app in the comments. Thanks for reading, do share this post with your friends.

This simple gesture will turn off the alarm quickly without touching your phone. All you need is a front facing camera on your device to capture to gesture. All the basic features like weather update, inbuilt ringtones, brightness control, etc., are available in the application. For the app to work properly, it should not be moved to the SD card of your device.

Change the icon for a removable disk in Windows

We all seem to have multiple USB devices that we plug and unplug these days, and you’ve likely noticed the rather generic looking icons that represent these devices. However, these aren’t what you have to use â€" you can actually set up something like a USB drive (as well as other devices).

In the image below, you will see the generic icons that Windows uses by default (I am using Windows 8.1). Drive E is a Kingston DT101 G2 16 GB thumb drive, and that is what we will change.

generic-drive-icons

First you will need to find the image you wish to use. I prefer the actual device, but you can use whatever you want. Once you have found and saved the image, then you will need to switch into an icon â€" I used AveIconifier, which is free. It does require your picture to be in PNG format, so you may need to convert it with an image editor, but even Microsoft Paint will do this. Drag and drop the image in the app, then drag and drop the new icon to a folder of your choice.

aveiconifier

Now drag and drop you new icon onto the drive and open a Notepad and enter the following text:

[autorun] icon=icon.ico

Save this file to the drive as well. When you’re done, eject the drive and then re-insert it and then changes will have taken effect. That’s all there is to it.

Disable the Windows key and L shortcut to stop accidental locking

Even if you are a proficient keyboard user, there will undoubtedly be times when your fingers don’t end up quite where you would like them to and you accidently hit keys other than the ones you intended. Sometimes this is not a serious problems, but there are plenty of scenarios in which it can be extremely irritating. For example, it is quite easy to press the Windows key and L by accident â€" you may be looking to left justify some text for example, and miss the Ctrl key â€" and this will lock your computer, requiring you to enter a password to get back to what you were doing.

This may not be something that happens all that often, but you can be sure that when it does happen it will be when you are rushing to get something finished quickly! You’ll be pleased to hear that there is a very quick and easy fix to avoid the problem â€" all you need to do is implement a simple registry tweak.

Press the Windows key and R at the same time to bring up the Run dialog, and then type regedit before pressing Enter â€" this will launch the Registry Editor. If a User Account Control dialog appear, just click Yes to continue.

keyboard_lock_1

Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem. With this key selected, click the Edit menu and select New > DWORD 32-bit value, name it DisableLockWorkstation and press Enter.

keyboard_lock_2

Double click the newly created item and change its value to 1 before pressing Enter.

You should not need to restart your computer for the new setting to take effect, and you should find that when you press the Windows key and L at the same time, nothing should happen!

Use Snagit to record your on-screen activity in Chrome for free

There are countless ways in which you can capture screenshots of what’s on your screen and save it as an image. You could just hit the Prt Scr key and then paste the contents of the clipboard into your favorite image editing app, or you could use Windows’ built in Snipping Tool. There are also numerous third party screen capture tools to choose from. But if you want to capture video footage of on-screen activity, it is a slightly different matter, and your number of choices is rather more restricted.

There is a great application called Snagit which can be used to capture screenshots in all manner of ways, but if you are using Chrome you can turn to a free app and extension instead of regular desktop software. Pay a visit to the Chrome Web Store where you’ll find a free app and a free extension to download and install.

snagit_1

For each, click the blue Free button followed by Add and allow the installation to complete. Once the installation is complete you’ll find a new shortcut in your Apps folder as well as a new button in the Chrome toolbar.

By default, Snagit can be used to gran images of your screen. Just click the toolbar button and draw a selection around the portion of the screen you would like to capture. The image will be automatically saved to your Google Drive.

In order to enable the video capture feature, you will have to change a couple of settings. First of all you will need to change a setting in Chrome itself. Type chrome://flags into the address bar and press Enter. Locate the setting labelled Enable Screen Capture Support in getUserMedia() and enable it.

snagit_2

Close and restart Chrome to put the new setting in place â€" you can also click the Relaunch button that appears at the bottom of the screen having enabled the new setting.

Launch the Snagit app, click the cog icon to the upper right hand corner of the dialog and then tick the box labelled Enable experimental features.

snagit_3

You can then click the  New Screen Recording button to record on-screen activity. All you need to do is click Yes to start the recording, and then click Stop Sharing when you’re done.

snagit_4

Your video can be saved as an AVI file and used locally or online.

Google Docs gets add-ons — here’s how to access them

Google Docs is the free online alternative to Microsoft Office â€" though Office also now has a free online version as well. Although many individuals and businesses use it, it has been knocked a bit for being less capable than the rival. One problem has been the lack of plug-ins, but that has now changed, as Google has rolled out the feature. Here’s how to access the new add-ons.

First, I need to point out that this is just rolling out, so it’s possible that you may not see the feature right away. With that said, head to the Google Docs page and open a new or existing file.

Scan the top menu and you’ll find a new item appropriately named “Add-ons”. It’s hard to miss, as Google has red “new” written just above the option.

google-docs-addons

Click on this new menu item and a simple and short drop-down appears. Two simple options appear â€" “Get add-ons” and “Manage add-ons”. The latter is greyed out unless you have already added one or more.

google-docs-get-addons

“Get add-ons” will open a box that displays all of the available plug-ins, and there are already quite a few, despite that this feature was only added a few days ago.

You can look at all of them, that’s the default view, or use the drop-down menu at the top left to narrow things down to a particular category, such as business, education and more. It’s all quite simple to use and manage, so keep an eye out for the update.

Make Your FireFox Browsing, Downloads and Uploads Faster with FasterFox

Choosing a web browser that browse fasts, download and upload files better is always a choice one has to make. Most of us use Google chrome because of its loading times. Firefox isn’t a slow browser but extensions like FasterFox make it much better. It’s a simple and effective extension that can make you browse fast, make your downloads and uploads even faster.

FasterFox comes with many tweaks like cache, rendering, pipe-lining, giving you the ability to customize your settings or use the already given presets. It optimizes the browser to your liking.

Fasterfox

Here’s how it works. After installing the extension, you’ll see a small icon in bottom left of your browser. Right click on it and click on options. You’ll be taken to the presets menu. You can, from there, choose from 3 presets. Courteous/Light preset that will be used for rendering tweaks only, it won’t increase web server load. Optimized/Medium preset that optimizes the network for increased performance or the Turbo charged/Strong preset, which is enabled by default when you install, it maximizes your browser’s performance, exceeds RFC specs (increases load to web servers).

If you know what you need, click on custom settings.

FasterFox Custom

You’ll see 5 new tabs of settings you can set. Cache, where you can change your browsers and DNS cache preferences. Connection, where you can change your HTTP connection preferences by allowing or disallowing max connections per server or proxy (increases number of connections helps a great deal for pages with number of images or other content). Pipelining which allows multiple requests to be sent to the server without waiting for responses to the previous requests. Rendering, where you can choose how many pages should be in firefox’s history allowing them to be available immediately upon clicking the back or forward button. And popups where you can disable popups from plugins or pages.

It does not matter if you don’t want to use custom settings, it’s Turbo charged/strong preset does the job VERY well. I tested a youtube video using the same preset and I could spot the difference by a mile.

Accidentally removed the Chrome App Launcher? Here’s how to get it back

Last year Google made some radical changes to it’s Chrome web browser. One of those changes was the redesign to the New Tab page, one of which removed the link to Apps and placed it up on the menu bar â€" it’s that multi-color grid of blocks at the left side. The position, next to bookmarks you have pinned there, is unfortunate, as it makes it fairly easy to accidentally delete when aiming at a bookmark you no longer find necessary.

Fortunately, this link is never really gone, and you can get it back if you removed it accidentally, or unpinned it intentionally because you didn’t think you would need it.

To get started, make sure you have the favorites toolbar enabled â€" the one that allows you to pin website links for easy access later. Find a blank area on it and right-click.

favorites-bar-right-click

Near the bottom, you will find an option titled “Show apps shortcut”. You see, it’s never really deleted, just hidden away, and there is no reason to do a clean install of the web browser.

There are other methods for doing this as well, but they are a bit more complicated. You can also add an App Launcher directly to Windows, making it somewhat like a Chromebook. To do so, visit this page.

chrome-app-launcher

That’s all there is to it. You should now have everything fixed.

Take and share screenshots in Windows 8/8.1 without extra software

Windows 8.1 is now firmly entrenched in the market, and Update 1 is now just around the corner. But that doesn’t mean that everything changes. Many features included in the previous operating system have moved forward to the new one, and that trend should continue, at least until version 9 hits the market, which we really have no clue about yet.

One feature that should certainly be hanging around for the foreseeable future is the ability to grab screenshots and easily share them via the web, without the use of additional third-party software. Here’s how you can do this, in a couple of easy steps.

To get started, pull up the screen you wish to grab an image of and then head to the Charms menu. To do so, move your mouse cursor to the top or bottom right of on the screen â€" for touch screens, the click on the “Share” button to get started.

charms-share

Once clicked, you will receive two simple options â€" email and Windows Phone. Choose which one you wish to use for sharing your screenshot.

windows-8-share

Click your choice and a screenshot will be snapped and you’ll get the option to access your share method. That’s all there is to it, you’re set.

Java installed crapware — here’s how to remove it

There is an increasing number of programs that come with adware, also known as crapware, with them. This isn’t malicious software, as it comes from legitimate companies, but it can provide an annoying experience, adding toolbars and changing search options, among other things.

Two such popular programs that do this are Java and Flash. Both enable the installation by default and rely on customers missing the option as they click through the installation process. If you have fallen victim to this during a Java setup then there is an easy way to get rid of the junk. Here’s what to do.

Start off by heading to the Control Panel and clicking Programs, followed by Programs and Features. Now scroll down to locate the Ask Toolbar and click the Uninstall option.

control-panel-programs

Ask, which produces this toolbar, offers a stand-alone removal tool, though the company doesn’t advertise this. You can grab that from APN Application Remover.

This same process will work for any software that installs the Ask toolbar on your system, and other programs that are bundled with these types of apps can frequently be removed via the same process. In some cases, you may need to head to the extensions section in your browser settings to eliminate other messes.
