How to Keep Hard Drives and Removable Storage Separate in Windows 8.1

There have been quite a few changes in the upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 â€" some make sense while others are rather less logical. Open up Explorer by pressing the Windows key and E and you’ll notice that â€" assuming you are running Windows 8.1 â€" your local removable storage is all grouped together under the single heading of Devices and drives.

You may well like the idea of keeping things separate. It makes sense as you probably use local drives and external ones for different things, but you could well be annoyed by the fact that when you plug in a USB drive, camera, or other storage device, your drive icons are rearranged.

Thankfully, it is fairly easy to get things back to the way they used to be, so external drives and internal drives are kept separate. In My PC, right click an empty area of the window and select the Group by option followed by More.

Tick the box labelled File System and then click OK.

You can then right click an empty space again and select Group by followed by File System.

Should you change your mind and decide you’d like things back the way they were, just select the Name option instead.
