B1 Online Archiver: Safely Preview and Download Contents of Any Compressed Archive

Compressed archives are a wonderful convenience for computer users. Thanks to these compressed archives, a large number of files can be easily transferred and the overall archive size is smaller than the sum of individual file sizes. But while there are pros to using compressed archives, there are cons as well:

Firstly, the archive formats are no longer limited to ZIP and RAR; we have 7Z, GZIP, TAR, and many, many more. It is possible that you get an archive which cannot be opened by software that currently exists on your machine. Secondly, particularly if you have downloaded the archive from an online source, you cannot be certain about the ‘safe’ nature of the archive’s contents.

For these reasons, ‘B1 Online Archiver’ is a website that you should bookmark and use while opening any archive that you have gotten from an unreliable source.

B1 Online Archiver is a web application that lets people preview the contents of compressed archives online. The site lets you upload an archive; it then unpacks it online and serves its contents for download to the user. To begin using the application, you should simply head on over to its homepage. The next step is to upload any compressed archive that is stored on your computer.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of this web app is its native support of a plethora of archive formats. The list of supported archive file formats includes b1, zip, jar, xpi, rar, 7z, arj, bz2, bzip2, tbz2, tbz, txz, cab, chm, chi, chq, chw, hxs, hxi, hxr, hxq, hxw, lit, cpio, deb, gz, gzip, tgz, tpz, hfs, iso, lzh, lha, lzma, rpm, tar, xar, z, taz, xz, dmg, cb7, cbr, cbt, and cbz.

While your archive is uploading onto the website, a progress GIF is shown which indicate files being packed into a briefcase. This GIF is the only thing which I feel the site should rethink: surely the files being unpacked from the briefcase would better indicate the archive-extraction process!

If you upload an archive that is password protected, the site will simply prompt you to type in the archive password so that it can continue its unpacking process.

With the archive uploaded and unpacked, its contents are shown to in list form.

The left most column displays the names of the files with their file extension included. The right most column displays the file size. Options between these columns let you directly download individual files that have been unpacked. In case of image files, you will see a magnifying glass icon â€" this lets you preview the image before you choose to download it.

Shortly after you have downloaded your files, the archive and its contents are removed from the site’s servers. You can choose to force-remove the contents from the files page by clicking on a provided link.

In this simply way, you can save yourself from the inconvenience of having a dozen file uncompression software installed and the fear of accidentally unpacking a virus from an infected compressed archive.
